History
In 1881, Father Michael J. McGivney, gathered some men and form
ed a society that would one day become the Knights of Columbus. They chose "Columbus" because it was obviously American and Catholic. "Knights" was originally "Sons" but was preferred because of the noble imagery.
Georgia
In the early 1900's, there were no Knights of Columbus Councils in Georgia. However, there were a small number of Catholic men in the larger cities of Georgia that were Knights. Michael J. O'Leary, a native of Savannah, found areas in Georgia which had a reasonably large number of Catholic men. Savannah, Atlanta and Augusta formed
the first councils. When Georgia met the Constitutional requirement of three local councils, a State Council was formed.
The Georgia State Council was granted
an official charter from the Supreme Council
in May 1903.
Our Council
On September 18, 1904 Macon was granted permission to begin its own council. The first Grand Knight was Ed Horne. The council was named in honor of Msgr. Thomas I. Sheehan, the first non-Jesuit priest of Saint Joseph. The council includes Saint Joseph, Saint Peter Claver, and Holy Spirit Catholic Churches.
